Phoenix of New Orleans, or PNOLA, was formed by residents, volunteers and donors after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The mission statement for the organization are to support the recovery of the residents of Lower Mid-City, New Orleans and its surrounding neighborhoods by rebuilding quality affordable housing and developing the community assets necessary for a vital neighborhood. PNOLA was founded by Tulane University medical student Paul Ikemire as a response to the decimating effects of Hurricane Katrina. In early 2006, PNOLA received its non-profit designation establish its headquarters in the heart of Lower Mid-City, accepting Americorps-sponsored volunteers by March. Set in the poor and impoverished neighborhood of the Lower Mid-City, PNOLA is a housing organization that claims to have a mission of housing assistance, including housing recovery and connections to the community.
